Calico
Museum of Textiles
Nobody
should leave Ahmedabad without visiting the Calico Museum of Textiles, in
the Sarabhai Foundation, in Shahibagh, 3 kms north of Delhi Gate. It
boasts of the finest collection of textiles, clothes, furniture, temple
artifacts and crafts in the country.
Sardar Patel Memorial Museum
Two hundred metres north up Shahibagh Road, the Sardar Patel Memorial
Museum houses an exhibition of photos, clipping and mementoes from the
life and career of the great ally of Gandhi and Nehru.
Gandhi Ashram
At
the northern end of Ashram Road, set beside sublime gardens, Gandhiji's
Sabarmati Ashram displays the Mahatma's letters and possessions, along
with a powerful collection of photographs of his years of fighting for
freedom.
Ahmedabad's museums are strong in arts and crafts. Among
them the informative Shreyas folk Art Museum , way out to the west
near the city limits, displays the traditional work of Gujarat's many
tribes.
The Tribal Museum in the northeastern corner of
Gujarat
Vidyapith, on Ashram Road 100m south of income tax Circle, is also
illuminating, detailing the various peoples of the state and their
customs, such as the painting of "magical" pictures by Bhils to
ward off disaster.
N C Mehta Gallery in the Indology Institute near Gujarat
University, has a superb collection of miniatures from all over India.
There's even a Kite Museum in Sanskar Kendra on Bhagatcharya
Road, west of the river.
