Durgi, Allagadda and
Tirupati are
the important stone carving centres of Andhra
Pradesh. Mythological figures and the stone carvings of the Gods and
Goddesses in the temples in these regions are the typical illustrations of
the stonework. Andhra sculptors use a range of materials from soft stone,
slate stone, Durgi stone to the harder granite stones. The stone
sculptures deserve to be greatly exalted.
Creation
Of Living Sculptures
Divine creations are shaped out of formless rocks. The ordinary formless
stone becomes the very manifestation of divinity under the skilled hands
of the traditional sculptor.
The traditional sculptor relies on his knowledge of Shilpasastra and his
perception of divine forms and chisels out finely sculpted specimens that
stand out with life-like features. Consequently the sculpture seems to
come to life before one's eyes.
