Gangamma Jatra, an annual Jatra of the Shrine
of 'Gangamma' is an important event in
Anantapuram,
Cuddapah district. It attracts
large crowds from various places in Cuddapah and
Chittoor districts and even
beyond. Hundreds of bullock carts, decorated with lime and red earth and
with festoons of mango and margosa leaves, locally called 'Siribandlu', go
round the temple throughout the night of the second day of the Jatra.
The deity is also taken out in a procession on the same night.
Competitions are held during the Jatra of specially selected bulls
dragging heavy stones. There is also a large assemblage of stalls and
shows of varied description.
Time For The Festivity
The Jatra is held for three days during the month of 'Magha' (February-
March) commencing from the day following Shivaratri.
