Gorantla is situated at a distance of 35-km
from Kurnool town. This village
was named after "Goruvanka Mahamuni" (a great sage) with whom it
was associated.
Among the religious institutions at the place, the temple of Madhavaswami,
constructed about 900 years ago is the most important one and the annual
festival celebrated in honour of the deity during 'Phalgunam'
(February-March), is attended by about 50,000 devotees both local and from
neighbouring 'Taluks'.
