historical importance. It was the capital of the Gajapati chiefs in the
17th century AD The magnificent fort in this town depicts the past glory
of these Kings. The town has grown around the fort, on the west of which
is the former cantonment.

and culture under the patronage of the enlightened ruling family of
Vizianagaram. It has a Music College and a Sanskrit College.
