Nignur is situated at a distance of 8-km
from Karimnagar. This place
derived its name from the existence of 400 temples in the past. The Telugu
word "Nalgunoorlu" for four hundred was corrupted to Nignur.
These temples were renowned for an exquisite sculptures resembling that at
'Hanumakonda'.
A Primitive Centre Of Temple Art
Though a small village now, it was once a place of much importance with
several temples and a very great centre of art. The inscriptions preserved
in Karimnagar Municipal Office pertain to the 'Chalukya' and 'Kakatiya'
dynasties. The places of worship in the village are the shrines of
'Lakshminarayanaswami' and Shiva. The Shiva temple is an ancient, star
shaped in plan, much like the Hanumakonda temple near Warangal. Red stone
and grey granite have been used in construction. This temple is filled
with artistic embellishments.
