Indian Christians trace the origin of their Church to the
Apostle Thomas, who is believed to have visited India and preached the
gospel here. The rule of the British in India for almost 300 years led to
the progress of Christianity in India and establishment of many churches
as centres of religious and social life. Many of these churches that are
lavishly built, have Islamic influence in their architecture and quite a
few are built of marble with beautiful gems and semi precious stones
inlaid in them.
