The
Churches of Goa, popular for their massive
structures incorporating myriad architectural styles, colourful altars,
and their sylvan location on hillocks, form an integral part of Goan
culture. The Old Goa Church Complex draws the maximum pilgrims both from
home and abroad throughout the year. The most important monuments in this
church city are the
Basilica of Bom Jesus, which consecrates relics of St. Francis
Xavier, the patron saint of Goan Catholics, the
Se Cathedral, which is
perhaps the biggest church of Goa in this part of the country, the
Church of St. Cajetan and the
Church of St. Francis of Assisi, which partly houses the
Archaeological Museum. Popularly described as the Rome of the East Old Goa
is worth checking out for these church monuments.
