The Guru's Land
About 30kms from the centre of
New Delhi the fast
developing city, Gurgaon is perhaps the most important of all Haryana
towns. Originally it was named 'Guru Gram' or 'Guru Gaon' (the 'village of
the teacher'). According to the famous epic Mahabharata, Yudhisthir gave
this land to Guru Dronacharya for teaching warfare and use of arms to the
five Pandavas when they were young. This was the place where Dronacharya
taught archery to the Pandavas.
Till Independence, Gurgaon was a fairly backward town, but after that it
rose to the occasion. Now there are a number of big industries like Atlas
Cycles and the Maruti automobile factories. A large number of offices of
top-notch firms have relocated from congested and contaminated New Delhi
to the peaceful locales of the fast growing city.
Gurgaon is perhaps the fastest developing city in northern India, and its
proximity to New Delhi
, especially to the international airport, has added to its popularity
among the various industrial establishments. Real estate is booming here
with new buildings coming up at an astronomical pace.
