The recently formed 17th district of Haryana, Panchkula is
surrounded by Himachal Pradesh in the north and
north east by Ambala district in the east
by Kurukshetra district in the south and Punjab and Union Territory of
Chandigarh in the West. The Panchkula District
comprises a region, which as a cradle of great civilization and culture
has a glorious past located in the district is the valley of the Rigvedic
Saraswati, which was a hub of great activity, in times gone by.
Panchkula is the newly formed 17th district of Haryana State. It comprises
of two sub divisions and two Tehsils named Panchkula and Kalka. It has 264
villages out of which 12 villages are uninhabited and 10 villages wholly
merged in towns or treated as census towns according to census 1991. There
are four towns in the district named Kalka, Panchkula, Pinjore and H.M.T.
Pinjore.
The district abounds in many places, the antiquity of which has been
established by archaeological explorations. Some other more recent places
have acquired importance on account of their economic and industrial.
Still other places have been developed as tourist spots like Morni hills
and Pinjore complex.
Tourist Attractions
Mansa Devi Temple:
The temple lies in Bilaspur village, about three kilometers east of Mani
Majra (Chandigarh UT). There are two temples dedicated to the goddess
here. The older one is said to have been built by the ruler of Mani Majra.
The fairs are held twice a year in March-April (Chat Shudiashtami) and
September-October (Asoj Shudi Ashtami).
Pinjore: It is an ancient
historical and religious place. It is said to be the earliest habitation
of man. The place is associated with five Pandavas who enroute to
Himalayas during their exile stayed here for sometime. The place was then
known as Panchpura Later corrupted to Pinjore. Pinjore is famous for the
beautiful Mughal Garden, perhaps the loveliest and the oldest in northern
India.
Kalka: Lying on the Panchkula - Shimla highway, Kalka is the
terminus of the broad gauge Delhi - Kalka railway line and the starting
point of narrow gauge Kalka - Shimla railway line. It forms the gateway to
Himachal Pradesh and most of the traffic and trade between the hills and
the plains passes through it. The area now forming Kalka was part of
erstwhile princely state of Patiala but was acquired by the British in
1846 AD and was included in Shimla district. It was transferred to Ambala
district in 1899 AD. A famous Kalka Devi temple is located on the Kalka -
Shimla road near octroi post. A fair is held every year in the months of
March-April. 
Morni Hills:
This high spur of the Shivaliks is a protected forest and a favourite spot
for trekkers and nature lovers. One can definitely expect to see peacocks,
rhesus monkeys and langoors. Take the help of a Forest Ranger to get a
glimpse of nilgai, sambhar and leopards. Several hotels, including
Mountain Quail run by the Haryana Tourism Corporation offer accommodation.
