Amongst
the temples in the city, the Raghunath Mandir takes pride of the place,
being situated right in the heart of Jammu. It consists of a cluster of
temples, which makes it the largest temple complex in northern India. The
inner sanctums of the temples contain gigantic statues of Gods and
Goddesses and numerous 'lingams' (also spelt as Linga). It contains
representatives of almost the entire Hindu pantheon, which makes it a rare
sight to see.
The famous temple of 'Bawey Wali Mata' is inside the Bahu fort, where every Tuesday and Sunday, pilgrims throng and jostle one another to worship the goddess. A little further away, on a hilltop opposite the Bahu fort, is a lovely spot overlooking the river Tawi, where a temple dedicated to Mahamaya has been constructed. It is said that if Bawey Wali Mata is the presiding deity of Jammu.
The Dargah of Peer Budhan Ali Shah is the other shrine that protects its people from mishaps and evil spirits. A friend of Guru Gobind Singh, Peer Baba lived all his life on milk alone and was 500 years old when he died. On Thursdays, one can find Hindu and Sikh devotees vastly out numbering their Muslim brethren at this shrine; such is the faith that people have in the Peer Baba. Most VIPs make it a point to visit this Dargah when they come to Jammu.
An Arabian Faqir in 6th century travelled the Asian peninsula and came to Jammu to settle at the plateau outside the town in a dense forest. The exceptionally large grave built on the slope of Gumat speaks about his lofty personality.
This Dargah is situated at a little distance from the Maharaja's palace on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. The place is as known because of the residence of five Peers (holymen), lived here and dedicated themselves to the meditation.
This Dargah is located at Samba. The Peer had immense spiritual powers and he is included in those Muslim saints who had a large number of devotees from all the faiths and religions. The local Hindus look after Garib Shah's samadhi.
This cave shrine of Lord Shiva also known as "Jamawant" cave is said to be the oldest historic place in the Shivalik region. Located amidst Indigenous rocks and acacia jungle in North-East of Jammu city on the side of circular road above Tawi River, the history of the cave is said to be connected with epic-age.
Aap Shanbhu temple Sathrian is a temple situated at Sathrian in Roopnagar area of Jammu city. The stone temple has self-made stone Lingam. According to a legend, in the times immemorial this entire place was an uninhabited jungle, the milky cows and buffaloes used to come to the Lingam after grazing and shed entire milk on the Lingam.
Ranbireshwar temple is famous for the 12 Shiva 'Lingams' of crystal measuring 12" to 18" and galleries with thousands of Saligrams' fixed on slabs.
Peer Mitha is another famous shrine in Jammu. Peer Mitha was a contemporary of Ajaib Dev and Ghareeb Nath. Both saints were famous for their prophecies and miracles. 'Mitha' means the sweet one for this peer would accept nothing more than a pinch of sugar from his devotees.
Maharaja Gulab Singh also constructed a Gadhadhargi temple near his palace, Mubarak Mandi soon after becoming the ruler of the State. The temple has two life size statues of Narayana and Lakshmi.
