Located in the peaceful and serene vicinity
of the Mysore University, the Kukkarahalli Lake was built by Dewan
Poornaiah in 1864 AD. The lake sprawling over 120 acres has more than 180
species of birds including the aquatic kind.
The lake plays host to over 30 species of migratory birds that fly all
the way from far flung areas such as the cold environs of Siberia, to
breed here.
The Inspirational Waters
The ever-compelling beauty of this lake has inspired many a poet and
writer. Karnataka's poet laureate, late Kuvempu (Dr. K.V.Puttappa) and
renowned English writer R.K Narayan are among the many who were smitten by
the beauty of the lake.
The charm and the splendour of the lake find mention in their works.
Administered by the Mysore University, the lake is used by the Naval wing
of the National Cadet Corps to provide boat-pulling training to its cadets
for the annual boat-pulling competition.
Karnataka State Tourism Department provides boating facility in both
motor and paddleboats. There is a sidewalk along the lake with shaded
stone benches for people to sit, relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of
nature.
