On
the western outskirts of the city of Bijapur
lies the mausoleum of lbrahim Adil Shah II- Ibrahim Roza, said to have
inspired the Taj Mahal
in Agra.
The Ibrahim Roza is a beautiful tomb with artistically laid out corridors
and interconnecting buildings with richly decorated walls and perforated
stone windows.
At the centre of the town are large arches outlining the forts and its
beauty in moonlight. Standing on a common platform, these buildings are
surrounded by gardens on three sides.
A large fountain and reservoir separate the mosque from the tomb.
Fergusson, the famous historian found these beautiful group of buildings
far excelling anything of the sort on this side of the Hellespont.
And so taken up by his creation was its architect Malik Sandal that he
exclaimed: 'at the beauty of this structure, the paradise stood amazed'.
The enchanting building has a mosque facing it. Embracing 1,16,300 square
feet is the Jamma Masjid -"one of the finest mosques in India".
