On
entering the fort at Gulbarga, one can
see the beautiful mosque called as Jumma Masjid. Built by Feroze Khan,
this huge mosque covering an area of 38016 sq. feet resembles the great
mosque of Cardova in Spain.
The architectural style is typically Persian, with stilted domes and
narrow entrances. The mosque has four shapely domes at the four corners.
These are dominated by a fifth larger one located over the large central
'mihrabby'.
The roof covering the entire courtyard makes this mosque unique.
According to Catherine B. Asher, the famous historian, a completely
covered prayer chamber and court were never again built in South Asia
except for the Khirki Mosque in Delhi, which is a nearly covered
courtyard, open only in four small areas.
To the southern entrance of the fort is a group of royal tombs. Here, one
is compelled to reflect on the mortality of human life.
