Buddhism
has made quite an impact on Maharashtra and one can
witness it at the various cave sites that are situated around the state.
The Ajanta and
Ellora caves are the greatest
specimen's of rock-cut architecture and Buddhist culture. Excavated
between the 3rd and 11th centuries, the 12 exquisite caves of
Aurangabad
belong to the Buddhist era. Known as the oldest Buddhist caves in India,
the Pithaikhora caves form a link between the art of Amravati and Sanchi.
Though there are no representations of Buddha found in the 2nd century
caves of Kanheri, symbolic representation of his religion are found over
here.
