The major city of the state of Maharashtra is Mumbai a cluster of seven islands derives its name from "Mumbadevi", the patron goddess of the Koli fisher folk, its oldest inhabitants. The city Nagpur derives its name from river Nag along which it is situated and it is placed in the centre of in geographical terms. Nashik stands on the bank of Godavari River one of the holiest rivers of the Deccan. Kumbh Mela held here in every 12 years attracts large number of devotees.
