Pataleshwar caves are located in the heart of the
Pune City amidst
modern high-rise structures and developments. The earliest architectural
remains in Pune are the Shiva caves at Bhamburda (present day
Shivajinagar) in the Ganeshkhind hill, which probably dates back to the
7th/8th century.
There is also the Pataleshwar temple, a rock-cut shrine, dating to Yadava
period. It reminds us of Ellora, the temple has been carved out of a
single boulder of awe-inspiring size, which includes massive pillars, a
Shiva shrine and a Nandi bull.
