Lying at a distance of 40-km from
Pune is the Purandhar
Fort, which plays an important role in the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji,
the brave ruler of the Maratha kingdom. For quite sometime, Purandhar was
the capital of the Maratha Kingdom, when it was in the budding stages.
Shivaji concluded a peace treaty at Purandhar fort and on insistence of Jay
Singh, agreed to pay visit to Aurangzeb at the Imperial court of Agra (it is
difficult to understand what led Shivaji to agree to this proposal and many
theories have been proposed by historians).
Purandhar fort is an ideal picnic spot, situated atop a mountain at a
height of 1,350 metres. This fort has been fairly restored to its' past
glory by the National Cadet Corps, who are based nearby.
Pune is well connected by air, rail and road with the important places within and beyond the state. There are regular buses from Pune station that take tourists to the fort.
Accommodation is available at the hotels in Pune.
