Pune University is located on 400 acres of sprawling grounds
with quiet roads and small open canteens towards the city limits. It once
comprised the official residence of the Governor of Bombay Presidency
during the fierce annual monsoons of the coasts.
The seat of education in Pune, also known as the Oxford of the east, has
students from all over the world enrolled for the large number of courses
it offers. The world famous Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and
Astrophysics (IUCAA) is on the university campus.
One can spend a pleasant evening at the University gardens, which were
laid out by Mr.Woodrew, a garden expert. The gardens have been expanding
from time to time, under successive gardeners to its present state. This
park possesses beautiful lawns, flowerbeds, growing with numerous imported
and acclimatized annuals, thousand of large and small trees, shrub,
ornamental plants etc.
The main building is in Italian-Gothic style, built with the local grey
trap rock. It is surrounded by a high square tower (30m high), a swimming
pool and well kept lawns.
Pune is well connected by air, rail and road with the important places within and beyond the state. From Mumbai, regular MSRTC buses and private buses ply to Pune. For local transportation auto rickshaws, city buses and taxis are available.
