The New Palace in Kolhapur
houses the Shahaji Chhatrapati Museum- a weird array of the former
Maharaja's possessions, who recently died in 1983. British architect
Charles Mant designed the New Palace in 1881 in the Indo-Sarcenic style.
The museum contains an unusual and interesting collection of the former
Maharaja's possessions from guns to pig-sticking trophies to clothes.
There is a large, excellent weapons collection, including a gold-plated,
double-barrelled shotgun, some swords, and other guns. One of Aurangzeb's
swords is also present in the collection.
Kolhapur is well connected by air, rail and road with the important places within and beyond the state. For city transportation city buses, taxis and auto rickshaws are available.
Accommodation is available at the hotels in Kolhapur.
