The Portuguese settled here in 1522, and this area was later taken over by the Marathas. </P> <H2>A Picnic Hideout </H2> <P CLASS="txt"> Chaul is an interesting place for a day's picnic as tourists can find forts, churches, ancient Buddhist caves, temples and the ruins of an old Portuguese palace here. The hilltop Muslim Korlai fort stands on the opposite bank of the river, looking across to the Portuguese fort. </P> <H2>HOW TO GET THERE </H2> <P CLASS="txt"> <B>Boat & Road: </B>Ferries run to Revas from Mumbai's Baucha Dhakka ferry wharf and to Alibaug from Apollo Bunder. It is a short bus ride from either of these to Chaul.
