Located 40-km south of Mumbai , Chaul is an old Portuguese settlement. The Portuguese settled here in 1522, and this area was later taken over by the Marathas.
Chaul is an interesting place for a day's picnic as tourists can find forts, churches, ancient Buddhist caves, temples and the ruins of an old Portuguese palace here. The hilltop Muslim Korlai fort stands on the opposite bank of the river, looking across to the Portuguese fort.
Boat & Road: Ferries run to Revas from Mumbai's Baucha Dhakka ferry wharf and to Alibaug from Apollo Bunder. It is a short bus ride from either of these to Chaul. One can also reach Chaul by road on the panvel and pen road.
