Paithan is an ancient city and a pilgrimage centre situated on the banks of the Godavari, 56-km south of Aurangabad . Jayakwadi (Paithan) was formerly a prosperous trade centre called Pratishthan. The Marathi poet Sant Eknath lived here several centuries ago. Paithan was also a famous seat of learning.
This place is well known for the beautiful 'Paithani' silk sarees with intricate zari borders. Of special interest to nature lovers are the gardens around the Jayakwadi Dam nearby where observation points enable you to watch resident and migratory birds.
