A
three-hour drive uphill from
Guwahati
takes you to Shillong, the capital of
Meghalaya, which lies at a height of 1,496m above sea
level. En route you will pass first the mandatory stop at Nangpoh, where
you can enjoy a cup of teawhile watching the flow of traffic. 17-km from
Shillong is Umiam where a large
lake was formed after a hydroelectric dam was built over a stream. A 56-km
drive along a narrow winding road takes you to Cherrapunjee once of the
wettest places in the world. Mawsynram is place that snatched away the
title for the wettest place on earth from Cherrapunjee, but this lovely
town is also known for its limestone caves and orange honey.
