Jaipur is the main transport hub for Rajasthan and has daily
air and train services to most major Indian cities. Buses are also
frequent to destinations in and around the state. Short journeys of
destinations such as Agra, Bharatpur, Ajmer (for Pushkar) and towns in
Shekhawati are best made by road; one exception is Swai Madhopur, the hop
over destination for Ranthambore National Park, which is most easily
reached by train.
If one is heading towards Jaisalmer, think about breaking the 631-km trip
at Pushkar and /or Jodhpur; otherwise prepare for a long overnight
journey. Or one can change trains at Jodhpur, but there are no direct rail
services to Jaisalmer from Jaipur. BY AIR
A number of private companies, in addition to various airline services,
operate flights from Jaipur's Sanganer airport. There are daily departures
to Delhi, Mumbai, Udaipur and Aurangabad. There are also domestic flights:
eight weekly flights to Ahmedabad; three weekly to Jodhpur and four weekly
to Calcutta.
BY RAIL
An excellent connection to Delhi is by the Shatabdi Express (4hr. 15
min). Also connected by the Intercity Express (5hr. 35 min.), which
provides a convenient link on a vestibule, chair seating rail service.
Other connections to Jaipur are from Bikaner, Jodhpur, Udaipur,
Ahmedabad, Secunderabad and Lucknow. The Jaipur Railway station is in then
heart of the town and has computerized reservation services.
BY BUS
Frequent RSRTC buses to most destinations reachable by road from Jaipur
leave from the Inter-state bus stand on station Road. For longer routes,
faster "deluxe" services guarantee seats and A/C coaches.
Private bus services are also quite a reasonable alternative.
Jaipur is located on National highways 8 (Delhi-Ahmedabad-Mumbai) and 11
(Agra-Bikaner). For those arriving from Agra, the most convenient rest and
refreshment point is Mahwa; and for those coming from Delhi, the central
resting point is Behror. There is another resting spot at Dharudhera.
These mid-way points are equipped with fast food joints, motor repair
facilities, cloak rooms, bars and rooms for over night stay.
