Manppad, a remote village near Thiruchendur, is an important
place for Christians. It is a place, which lead to the origin of
Catholicism in
South India . It is believed that St. Francis Xavier lived in this
cave and preached the gospel to the fisherman during the early 14th
century.
Holy Cross Church built on the shore is 400 years old, which has some
fragments of the True Cross from Jerusalem and is one of the churches
connected with St. Francis Xavier. There is another church called St.
James Church, which was built after the patron saint of Manappad over 80
years ago built on the left on the alter. One can see the marvellous alter
and people also believe that Saint Arockia Nathar have performed many
miracles here.
Tourists can access this place from Thiruchendur, which is well connected by other cities within the state, as it is a famous pilgrim spot of Tamil Nadu.
As such there is no proper accommodation facilities but tourists can stay at choultries available at Thiruchendur.
