Tiru Anniyur is one of the 275 Shivastalams located at a
distance of 4-km from Mayiladuturai. There is a temple dedicated to
Kariyamaanikka Perumal in the temple complex.
The sun's rays illuminate the sanctum for 5 days from the 24th day of the
month of Pisces (Panguni) and hence this shrine is also referred to as a "Bhaskarastalam".
The Legend
According to The Legend Rati the wife of Manmathan worshipped Lord Shiva
here, after which Lord Shiva is believed to have restored him in a
physical form to her and in a formless form to all else.
Another legend says that Lord Shiva is said to have appeared before Agni
under the Lemon tree, which is the 'Stala Vriksham' here and hence, got
the name, "Vikucharanyeswara". Lord Shiva has blessed
Harishchandra here, and hence he got the name "Aabatsakayeswara".
It is also believed that Pandavas visited this shrine.
Three worship services are offered each day over here.
Tiru Anniyur is located just 4-km away from where there is a railway station. Regular bus services are also available from Poompuhar and Mayiladuthurai.
