The Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu is a horticulturist's delight and tourist resort and has a border with Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala states. The people inhabiting the Nilgiris from the earliest discernible times consist of the Todas, the Badagas, the Kothas and the Kurumbas in the upper region and the Irulas in the lower region. Of these, the Todas, who are vegetarians, tall and fair, have dwindled in number. The Badagas, who speak a mixture of Kannada and Tamil, are said to have migrated from Mysore 400 years ago. The Irulas are confined to Mudumalai sanctuary.
