Ajanta, dating from 2nd century BC. Caves were discovered in the year 1819
by a group of British officers. It took around 600 years to create &
carve marvellous statues in these caves with little more than a hammer &
chisel. Ajanta, once the retreat of the Buddhist monastic orders features

Ellora Caves : Finest specimen of cave temple architecture in the world.
Impressive on their own, these rock-hewn temples & monasteries lie just
30km away from Aurangabad city. They contain elaborate facades &
exquisitely adorned interiors. These structures represent three ancient
religious faiths: Hinduism, Buddhism & Jainism. In total, there are 34
cave temples & can be divided into three groups belonging roughly to
three periods: Mahayana Buddhism (550-750 AD) 12 caves, Hinduism (600-875
AD) 17 caves & Jainism (800-1000 AD) 5 caves. Twenty-two more caves,
dedicated to Shiva, are recently discovered. Kailash temple, central
attraction at Ellora, is the most remarkable. Chiselled by hand from a
single massive rock, it includes a gateway, pavilion, courtyard, vestibule,
sanctum Sanctorum & tower. It took over five centuries for Hindu,
Buddhist & Jain monks to chisel out these monasteries, temples, &
chapels & decorate them with remarkable imagination & detail. These
