The
holy and legendary river Bhagirathi originates from
Gaumukh, the
Gangotri glacier in the northern
slope of Trishul peak at the height of 5611 metres. The other tributaries,
river Jadhganga and river Bhilaganga join it before river
Alaknanda, which joins
it at Deoprayag. From there onwards, the river is conclusively called
Ganga when it descends into the plains at Haridwar.
